Being Present
The Great Equalizer

The book of Ecclesiastes reveals a deep frustration with reality. Bad things happen to good people, good things happen to bad people, time keeps going, and everything in our life seems totally out of control. Amidst all of this confusion, the book makes one thing clear: one is to live life before this God who is both hidden and revealed. And the only way to truly live life is with the full awareness that it is fleeting and ungraspable, and to enjoy: eating, drinking, wearing fancy clothes, being with loved ones. The book is full of expressions for enjoyment (2:24, 3:12, 7:14, 9:7-9). The point isn't to ignore the bad. The point is to face the bad because it's inevitable, and enjoy the good. Enjoyment then isn't an ideal to pursue, it's a responsibility to God who has given those gifts. When we adopt a posture of total trust in God, it frees us to simply enjoy life as we actually experience it; not as it ought to be, or want it to be, or planned it to be.
