
Sharing a meal is a symbol of friendship and intimacy. In the gospel of Luke, Jesus shares a lot of meals with a lot of people. Within the narrative, each of these meals signify a transformational encounter with Jesus and the kingdom that he has been talking about. A pattern develops: Jesus is eating a meal, guests arrive, something happens that prompts discussion, which leads to an unexpected revelation about what the kingdom of God is like and who is (and who isn’t) a part of it.
